Blind Signal Identification for Intelligent Radios: Classical Approaches and New Trends



In recent years, the academic communityand industry focused on research, proof of concepts and field trials forthe 5G wireless cellular networks. While 5G is rolling on, with large-scaledeployments in 2020, vibrant research efforts are made to define 6G, itsapplications and enabling technologies. 5G represents only the beginning ofmajor transformations in the wireless ecosystem. The massive connectivity andultra-reliable low-latency communications represent new features introduced by5G, while native artificial intelligence and integrated sensing andlocalization are featured for 6G. Additionally, the evolution of aerial andsatellite networks and underwater Internet-of-Things is unprecedented. Securitythreats have been a significant concern, and this issue becomes even morestringent in the 5G and beyond wireless ecosystem.

This talk introduces blind signal identification, required for spectrummonitoring and threat identification among other applications. The taxonomy ofsignal identification methodologies is first presented, followed by a moredetailed discussion on statistical pattern recognition techniques. Machinelearning applications to signal identifications are also provided. The talkconcludes with future challenges posed to signal identification in thecontinuously evolving and exciting field ofwireless networks.
